About me

I am a native of Georgia and attended Tuskegee University, Alabama, where I majored in psychology.  I received my master’s degree in Early Childhood Psychological Development from the University of Rochester, New York, and a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies from UNC-Greensboro, North Carolina. After graduating, I was selected as a Ford Foundation Fellow to study family systems in Accra, Ghana and, later, a Fulbright Fellow to study the One-Child Policy in China.  For a decade, I taught courses that addressed all stages of the life cycle and family and social systems.  After receiving tenure at NCCU and the University-wide Excellence in Teaching Award, I came to Duke as an academic dean in 2008 and appointed a Senior Associate Academic Dean in 2015. My research examines material culture and cultural production within the context of childhood. I am married with two children, a boy and a girl. My hobbies include making diaper cakes, family heirloom quilts, and serving as a docent for the North Carolina Museum of History.
