Welcome to Duke’s Office of Health Professions Advising—also known as HPA.
OUR MISSION: We partner with undergraduate students and alumni from Pratt and Trinity who are interested in clinically-oriented healthcare careers. We empower each advisee to be both their best authentic self as a person and future healthcare professional.
We are committed to providing holistic advising to all Duke undergraduates. Our personalized advising begins in your first year and can continue for up to five years post-graduation with everything from course planning, experiential preparation, and application process including managing your acceptances. In addition to advising, we provide robust preparation and application curricula along with various professional development events throughout the year. The HPA team works with students and alumni across a wide range of metric levels and can help you understand your options regardless of where you are starting.
Begin your journey with us by registering officially with our office to ensure continued support, and sign up for weekly emails filled with announcements and opportunities for you to engage with healthcare, service, and professional growth.
We are excited to work with you!
If you have questions, call us at 919-684-6221 or email prehealth@duke.edu. For quick questions, use drop-in advising sessions.
Note: We are not able to meet with or advise prospective students. Duke Kunshan students should meet with DKU Office of Undergraduate Advising.

- HPA 130-Prehealth Foundation: What to do and Why- Do you want to pursue a research opportunity or a volunteer role with patients this spring? HPA advisors will help you understand the WHY behind categories of experiences, WHAT constitutes a quality endeavor, and HOW to start recording and reflecting upon each activity. We will also share resources for finding summer opportunities.
- HPA 140-Four-Year Planning Workshop- First-year students and anyone new to prehealth are invited to join advisors at the Four-Year Planning Workshop, where you will create a flexible four-year plan focused on prehealth coursework. During the workshop, you will explore whether you can complete prehealth requirements alongside different combinations of majors, minors, and certificates. You’ll also see how experiences such as study abroad, DukeEngage, research, or other high‑impact opportunities can fit into your academic and personal priorities. In addition, the workshop will help you think through how to use your summers, when to take standardized tests, and how a gap year might strengthen both your Duke experience and your professional school application. To prepare, review the requirements for your intended health profession (see Course Requirements by Career Type. [Click here to access the workshop materials].
