Welcome to English!
In the Duke English Department you will encounter a range of learned and passionate professors who will introduce you to the transformative voices of great literatures written in English from the British Isles, America, and the many countries of the world in which English has been used. We offer clear direction on how to profit most from study within the English department, and the major also seeks to encourage our students to assume an enduring habit of questioning and intellectual self-articulation. After graduation, English majors pursue a broad variety of careers in academia, law, education, journalism, the arts, business, medicine, and other fields.
The English Department Ambassadors are a vital resource for you as a new major. The Ambassadors can tell you about specific courses, what to expect from the major, and answer any questions you may have about the different areas of study. They can also recommend ways to get more involved with department events or meet other English students.

Advising
Your first step is to choose your advisor. You can either chose your advisor or the DUSA will assign someone in your primary area of interest for you. If you chose your own advisor, forward their written acceptance to Michelle Dove. If you'd like an advisor assigned, let Michelle Dove know. Both primary and secondary majors need to have an assigned advisor.
