I joined the Academic Advising Center after serving as a Program Coordinator with the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture for nearly three years. The Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture serves as one of seven identity-based cultural centers on campus in the Department of Student Affairs. My role was to promote racial understanding, build radical and conscious Black community, and to foster an appreciation for Black people, Black history, Black culture, and the vast contributions of people of the African Diaspora.
Prior to beginning my tenure at Duke University, I have been involved with youth empowerment issues through non-profit organizations and school settings since I, too, was a youth. My career as a credentialed educator began in Philadelphia, and has provided me with opportunities to work with youth in diverse environments. I have taught in the remote rainforest of Belize, Central America, the borderlands of Southern New Mexico, and briefly at Hillside High School here in Durham, North Carolina. While living in New Mexico, I served as Adjunct Faculty at New Mexico State University, where I mentored prospective social studies teachers, helping them incorporate social movements and critical race theory into their curriculum. I hold a BA in African-American Studies and Sociology from Northeastern University, and a MS in Leadership and Organizational Management from Springfield College. In addition to my role as a Director of Academic Engagement (DAE) at Duke, I also serve as the advisor to the Duke chapter of the NAACP, and am a Teaching Assistant in the Program in Education.
I am thrilled about the prospect of building strong relationships with an array of Duke students. I hope to draw from my varied life experiences in order to relate with my advisees, while simultaneously gaining a strong understanding of their backgrounds, passions, and co-curricular pursuits. Duke has a remarkable set of global and civic opportunities, and I am extremely excited to find the ones that work for you!
