Mission & values

Our mission

Directors of academic engagement in the Academic Advising Center are committed to advancing the development of undergraduate students’ global awareness, citizenship and engagement with the humanities and sciences through one-on-one advising and mentoring. We teach students to imagine and plot their academic engagement at Duke as a four-year journey in which curricular, co-curricular and away-from-Duke experiences complement each other in enhancing their capacities to reflect and engage in global learning.

As advisors, we listen to and build relationships with students in order to promote and support their integration into opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. We assist them in identifying programs that best fit their interests and goals and in overcoming potential barriers to participation. As mentors, we encourage students to deepen their understanding of global challenges by making connections between their experiences, evolving academic interests and future plans.

Our values

As DAEs, we value …

Connection
We work with students to forge connections between their academic experiences, in and out of the classroom. We work with campus partners to connect students with opportunities both within and beyond Duke’s campus.

Advising
We honor each student’s academic engagement as a personal journey. As part of that journey, we are committed to listening to and meeting students where they are, whether they are becoming involved in new programs for the first time or looking for ways to reflect and build on previous experience.

Learning
We recognize and value a spirit of intellectual curiosity and adventure in our students. We encourage them to take risks in new fields and sites of study and to make their educations their own.

Community
We value engagement with the community and an ability to think and act beyond the university's walls as an essential part of Duke students’ learning. We believe that the global and local are inextricably linked. We encourage our students to recognize communities both within and beyond Durham and the United States as meaningful sites for civic engagement that confront shared global challenges and aspirations.
